Many teachers would say that if you have survived your first 5 years, you are now a master teacher. You become a master teacher through reflection, professionalism, pedagogy knowledge, and having a collaborative mentality. I remember when my mother first became a teacher, she would talk, albeit complain sometimes about her day at work and then figure out what she needed to do to have a better day for her and her students. I saw her reflect and problem solve and put forth her best effort day after day. She was nominated for teacher of the year and won several times, she was called on by her school district in Mullins, SC, to be a model teacher and her students adored her. I do not think that she would have had such an illustrious teaching career had she not gone through deep reflection. Nowadays we teachers are still using reflection as a best practice. I want to become a total quality teacher, so I have started an ePortfolio to hold a digital collection of my work. From my research and through my EDLD 5303 course at Lamar University, I learned that an ePortfolio can help you grow as a teacher, help others in education, and benefit me in the future.
Professional Growth as a Teacher
Teachers will have the opportunity to explore more fully who they are and what they know and can do.
Teachers will be able to demonstrate professional growth and show a commitment to continued learning.
Teachers will assess strengths and interests which allow for exploration of career options. (Barnstable, 2010)
Helping Others in Education
Best Practices: By sharing lesson plans, teaching materials, and successful strategies, I can provide valuable resources to other educators, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Mentorship: An ePortfolio can serve as a tool for mentoring new teachers, offering them insights and practical advice based on your experiences.
Community Building: It can help me connect with other educators, creating a network of support and collaboration that benefits the entire educational community.
Future Benefits
Career Advancement: A well-maintained ePortfolio can enhance your resume and cover letter, making you a more attractive candidate for promotions, new teaching positions, or leadership roles.
Lifelong Learning: Continuously updating your ePortfolio with new experiences, skills, and reflections encourages ongoing professional growth and adaptability.
Personal Branding: An ePortfolio helps you build a strong personal brand (Nantana, Dr., 2022), showcasing your unique teaching style and accomplishments, making you more recognizable and respected in the field of education, like “total quality teacher”.
